How to: Create a .LOG file in Notepad.
Solution:
Type the following as the first line in a Notepad file:
.LOG
NOTE: Tracking information as to what was removed, changed, or added to the computer may easily solve future conflicts, errors, or problems.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Programs' and select 'Accessories'.
3) Select 'Notepad'. (A blank document appears.)
4) Type the following line in the blank document:
.LOG
NOTE: If .LOG is typed at the beginning of the file, the current time and date appear every time the file is opened.
5) Save the file:
a) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save As'. (The 'Save As' dialog box appears.)
b) In the 'File name' box, type:
C:\WINDOWS\LOGFILE.TXT
c) Click 'Save'.
6) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit'to exit Notepad.
7) Repeat steps 1) through 3) to open Notepad.
8) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
9) In the 'File name' box, type:
C:\WINDOWS\LOGFILE.TXT
10) Click 'Open'.
11) Under the current date and time, type information about any errors received, hardware/software that was added or removed, or any other changes made to the computer.
12) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save'.
13) Exit Notepad.
14) Repeat steps 8) through 13) to reopen and type more information into the .LOG file.
